About Us

A scenic view of the Elks Lodge at sunset.

South Haven's Elks Lodge 1509 has been a gathering spot on Phoenix Street for locals, members, and visitors passing through southwest Michigan. Walk in on a weekend and you'll find the bar humming, a game on the screen, and regulars who actually talk to you. The menu holds its own, with options that go well beyond typical lodge fare, and the staff keeps things moving whether it's a quiet Tuesday or a packed Saturday night.

The lodge is part of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a national fraternal organization with a deep commitment to veterans, community service, and youth programs. Lodge 1509 carries that mission locally, supporting South Haven and the surrounding Lake Michigan shoreline community through fundraisers, scholarship programs, and charitable events throughout the year.

With a 4.3-star rating and a loyal member base, the lodge welcomes both longtime Elks and first-time guests. Bus groups from the district have made it a regular stop, and on the right night you might find 50 people filling the room for a playoff game or a district visit. This is the kind of place that earns its reputation one round at a time.

What We Offer

The bar at Lodge 1509 pours a solid selection of beers, spirits, and mixed drinks at prices that won't make you flinch. Pair that with a food menu that visitors consistently call fantastic, and you have a legitimate reason to stop in even if you're just passing through South Haven on your way up the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Beyond the bar and kitchen, the lodge hosts private events, district gatherings, and member functions throughout the year. The space can accommodate large groups, as evidenced by the bus trips that roll through on weekends. Members also gain access to the full network of Elks lodges nationwide, meaning your card gets you a warm welcome at over 1,500 locations across the country.

Community programs round out what the lodge offers. From veterans' support initiatives to youth scholarship funds, Lodge 1509 channels a portion of every dollar back into the South Haven area. Membership is open to U.S. citizens who believe in God, and the application process is straightforward for anyone interested in joining.

"Took an Elks bus trip to visit multiple Elks clubs in the district. South Haven was our last stop and they were aware of our plans to stop. 50+ people on a Saturday does really help the weekend sales numbers. Unfortunately it was not a warm reception and felt like we were an inconvenience. The waitress we had was great but the rest of the experience was not."

"Worst customer service I've had at an Elk's. People are rude and we brought 48 people from a bus in. Terrible staff. Sorry I hate writing this. Cause I have been an Elk for 25 years. I love the Elk's and have never had a bad experience at an Elk's. Do better please."

"After years of visiting South Haven, I just learned about the Elks Lodge! Membership is required for entry, and you should definitely get a membership! It's such a neat spot. I was blown away by the menu. Super friendly service. My only recommendation would be to dim the lights a little—they’re a little too bright for nighttime fun! and I completely forgot to take pictures-next time!"

"My wife and I experienced the identical experience as did Jeff and Lisa Scherer. We left on a cross country trip in late February, 2024 and traveled from Southern California to Florida and then from Florida to Wisconsin. Like Jeff and Lisa, we renewed our Elks memberships, but because of our travels our membership cards did not catch up with us until we returned to our home of record in May. I have been a member for 32 years and my wife for more than 25 years. My wife is a PER and we are both veterans. On May 15, 2024 at around 6 PM my wife and I found a parking spot downtown South Haven, strolled over to the Lodge and walked up a rather long flight of stairs to the upstairs quarters of the South Haven Elks. As we seated ourselves at the bar, the bartender asked for our membership cards. We showed the person our expired cards and explained that although we had both renewed our memberships, we had been traveling since late February and our new cards had not yet caught up with us. My expired card showed that I had been a member for 31 years and am a veteran, and my wife's card had all sorts of stickers on it, including the PER sticker. The bartender then took our cards and showed them to some other person sitting at the bar. That person shook her head and when the bartender returned, she informed us that we would have to leave. It is revealing to both my wife and me that after having visited 550 Elks lodges all across the country, South Haven was only the second lodge which we have found to be inhospitable. The proper thing for the folks to have done, in our opinion, was to have someone sign us in. But, no, no no! So, we took our business elsewhere, had a great meal across the street at a restaurant called "Clementine's" and capped off the evening at the local American Legion. Brotherly love and just plain good manners do not exist at South Haven Elks Lodge No. 1509."

Flag Day.

Long before it was a national observance, the Order set aside June 14th to honor the flag. Patriotism has always been one of our cardinal principles, and every lodge meeting still closes the same way it has for over a century.
